Carnival of Agilists - 10/13/05

Welcome to the third edition of the Carnival of the Agilists. This is the first rotated edition and the second to adhere to the structure John introduced according to the four main agile principles. Enjoy!

Responding to change over following a plan

  • Shabnam Tashakour provides a review of the article "Limits of the Learning Organization: A Critical Look" from the perspective of an agile implementation. Is a Learning Organization agile? Or an Agile Organization learning?
  • Martin Fowler contests the claim that XP is anti-planning in his blog on the Five Pound Bag.
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  • Mishkin Berteig dares to ask if there is one agile practice that is more important than all of the others. Check out which agile practice he believes it might be.
  • Skip has an "aha" moment as he learns a new way to look at estimating through collaboration from Mike Cohn.
  • IBM Rational has donated code and intellectual property of Rational Unified Process (RUP) to the Eclipse open source foundation. Has Rational thrown in the towel on their process due to the overwhelming takeover of agile? Or are they really a leader in bringing all of us back together again? You be the judge in these articles (by the way, I worked for Rational for 7 years so I have more right than most to poke at them)... Internet News ... ZDNet ... CBROnline
Working software over comprehensive documentation
  • Forrest Change is addicted to the speed of development using Test-Driven Development
  • Uncle Bob is reminding us not to let our testing code become the bastard child of the application. Treat it as you shall want to be treated by it.
  • Uncle Bob again is spot on with the importance of Test-Driven Design as compared to the dual entry bookkeeping that accountants use to reduce the chance of letting errors through in his article on the sensitivity problem.
  • Rachel Davies provides a very detailed review of how requirements fit into an agile process in her Agile Requirements paper.
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  • (no entries this week)
Miscellaneous
  • Rebecca Wirfs-Brock reminds that we should be careful about how our loaded words may scare people away when talking with customers and clients
  • I provided an example of a 10 Minute Presentation to be used in selling agile to executives. (Modestly sharing one of my own since it appeared to generate a fair amount of interest from some of the user groups)
  • Glen Allerman provides a host of informational links from his research on estimating and scheduling projects

petebehrens (Pete Behrens) : @Armond_M sorry, no recording of my Leading Agility "Inside-Out" from #RallyOn2012. Will look for a future recording opportunity.

petebehrens (Pete Behrens) : (time lapse) I DID IT! I ran a 44:30 10k - on a flat sea-level course in Seattle in cool weather. Mile high #BolderBoulder next.

petebehrens (Pete Behrens) : Amazing - 5:20am in Seattle hotel, all 9 treadmills are busy. Good motivation to run outdoors today.

Armond_M (Armond Mehrabian) : @petebehrens Thanks for sharing the slides. Is there a webinar-like presentation of these slides somewhere? #RallyON2012
