Carnival of Agilists - 3/29/07

Welcome to the most recent edition of the Carnival of Agilists - a blog roll of some of the thoughts, insights, ideas and trends in the agile community.

New to Agile? Here are some recent intro readings...

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

  • Beyond our need to support and protect our body, people have a few basic needs that they seek to satisfy - like ego, acceptance and development... Dave Churchill thinks the agile key to satisfying these basic human needs is in the Small Wins: Agile Psychology.
  • Another basic need is human interaction. Today, we live in a virtual work world with remote employees, we work at home or in issolated cubicals and we tend to communicate through very low fidelity interfaces - e.g. email, IM, SMS, etc. Esther Derby reminds us that Face to Face Still Matters.
  • Since we are exploring all of the facets of the human psychy, I would be remiss to not include Bill Joiner's discussion on how agile leaders must leverage their ambivalence to increase their creative agility. Is he crazy? Find out for yourself in his The Power of Ambivalent Thinking.
Working software over comprehensive documentation
  • Is working software enough? If I hack my way through an implementation, failing to refactor impacted code, am I "done"? Most agile teams struggle knowing when to refactor, and when not to. Should we assign an Agile Architect to help the team? Mark Levison questions this in his post Agile Architect - An Oxymoron.
  • What will it take for you to start using Test-Driven Development (TDD)? Forrest Chang believes The Powers of TDD are simply amazing... but you might have to see it to believe it.
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  • What is the greatest benefit from the introduction of agile methods? Getting teams to work together more effectively? Quality practices? Marco Abis believes it is the focus on business value in his post From Technicality to Business Awareness: now what? What do you think?
Responding to change over following a plan
  • Some of my favorite new postings come from the work that David Anderson is doing at Corbis with his sustaining engineering team. David has received quite a bit of blogging press on his recent recipe for success and you can see for yourself how his Kanban in Action is achieving results Corbis.
  • Are you an optimist or pessimist. It takes both to create great software. Constraints are typically Yuri Gadow believes that Constraints Create Opportunities. Is he just an optimist or does he have a point?
  • What if responding to change means that you have to work harder to meet your goals? When does working harder begin to reduce effectiveness? Michael Vizdos helps you in understanding your team's terminal velocity and ideas to consider when your team is asked to "step it up" in his posting Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Over.

petebehrens (Pete Behrens) : (time lapse) I DID IT! I ran a 44:30 10k - on a flat sea-level course in Seattle in cool weather. Mile high #BolderBoulder next.

petebehrens (Pete Behrens) : Amazing - 5:20am in Seattle hotel, all 9 treadmills are busy. Good motivation to run outdoors today.

Armond_M (Armond Mehrabian) : @petebehrens Thanks for sharing the slides. Is there a webinar-like presentation of these slides somewhere? #RallyON2012
